Words LilÂly Delmage
PlumÂmetÂing temÂperÂaÂtures serve as the conÂspicÂuÂous reminder that OctoÂber is finalÂly upon us, and it’s time to start nursÂing our post-sumÂmer blues. As cliÂmates shift from balmy to bitÂterÂly crisp, it’s time to talk about the subÂseÂquent toll difÂferÂent weathÂer conÂdiÂtions can have on our skin.
We spoke to derÂmaÂtolÂogy and aesÂthetÂic regÂisÂtered genÂerÂal nurse, Emma ColeÂman, on how we can best treat sun exposed skin, and what steps we can take to proÂtect it as we head into the autumn-winÂter season.
As Emma is curÂrentÂly in the process of takÂing over her third aesÂthetÂic clinÂic since 2015, we can rest assure our skinÂcare queries are in good (moisÂturised, hydratÂed, and healthy) hands.

How can sumÂmer weathÂer harm skin?
ClinÂiÂcal triÂals have shown us that excesÂsive and/or long-term UV expoÂsure can deplete elasÂticÂiÂty and colÂlaÂgen proÂducÂtion and put skin under immense stress. This can cause pigÂmenÂtaÂtion and the forÂmaÂtion of lines and wrinÂkles. In some casÂes, this damÂage can be irreÂversible. Not only this, but excesÂsive UV expoÂsure can also often cause skin to become dehyÂdratÂed and dry. CerÂtain skin conÂdiÂtions such as rosacea are known to flare up durÂing times of UV expoÂsure, so this is someÂthing to keep in mind.
Excess sweatÂing is anothÂer comÂmon sumÂmer skin impact which leads to a build-up of bacÂteÂria on the skins surÂface and should be rinsed away with water. In addiÂtion, regÂuÂlar appliÂcaÂtion of thick sunÂscreens onto the skin can also lead to blocked pores, breakÂouts, and heat rash.
How can winÂter cliÂmates harm skin?
Dry, flaky, and rough skin can occur over autumn and winÂter due to the drop in temÂperÂaÂture outÂside, and the dry heat caused by home and car radiÂaÂtors. Eczema and psoÂriÂaÂsis can also often worsÂen at this time of year, so if you notice your skin become driÂer, you may need to change your skinÂcare rouÂtine. Make sure to include core hydratÂing prodÂucts such as hyaluronÂic acid and emolÂlient moisÂturisÂers such as CetraÂben. If you notice eczema or psoÂriÂaÂsis, you should see a skin specialist.
What can we do to take care of our post-sumÂmer skin as we head into winter?
A comÂbiÂnaÂtion of antioxÂiÂdant-rich skinÂcare and in-clinÂic treatÂments will help to conÂdiÂtion skin in prepaÂraÂtion for the harsh winÂter months. A good daiÂly vitÂaÂmin C serum will help to reduce dark spots, and hyaluronÂic acid serums will aid the hydraÂtion which may have been lost. Opt for a moisÂturisÂer with SPF built in which also conÂtains vitÂaÂmins A and E.
AnothÂer option would also be underÂgoÂing a course of medÂical grade skin peels which will also help to refine pores, reduce pigÂmenÂtaÂtion, and boost colÂlaÂgen and elastin proÂducÂtion; in the clinÂics we use ObaÂgi and EpiÂonce peels.
How can we keep preÂvent dull winÂter skin and proÂlogue ‘sumÂmer glowÂing’ skin?
ExfoÂliÂate the skin three times weekÂly to remove dead skin and encourÂage cell turnover, includÂing your neck. It’s also imporÂtant to use a retinol serum at night. AnothÂer key tip is to make sure to conÂtinÂue to use a moisÂturisÂer conÂtainÂing a sunÂscreen every day, as the sun is lowÂer in the sky in the coolÂer months and can still exert its effects on the skin. AnothÂer option is to have a course of laser or Intense Pulsed Light treatÂments to reduce thread veins, pigÂmenÂtaÂtion and keep skin lookÂing fresh and rejuvenated.
